Light Up Your Life brings clean energy to sports in Peru

May 4, 2016 By Shanna Edberg

lightupyourlifeA new initiative will bring sustainable, energy-efficient lighting to athletic fields and other community spaces in underserved communities in Peru and other parts of Latin America. “Light Up Your Life” will install solar-powered LED lighting that allows people to play sports and gather after dark and increases the safety of nighttime activities and events. Participating in sports is a way to improve individual and public health while teaching skills and values such as cooperation, discipline, confidence, and respect for others. It can also improve the local economy and boost educational performance.

Climate Protection: Reduces carbon emissions from lighting
Energy & Mobility: Brings electricity to off-grid and underserved areas; reduces energy use
Jobs & Assets: Improves nighttime productivity; revitalizes communities
Health, Well-Being, & Safety: Encourages physical activity; improves safety
Connection: Allows for increased community involvement and community activities

This post is part of a series on examples of multisolving, or climate-smart policies that simultaneously work to mitigate climate change while providing co-benefits such as the ones described above. The multiple benefits analysis was done using the FLOWER framework.
