New research published in npj Climate Action finds that the interactive En‑ROADS Simulator, Climate Solutions Workshop, and Climate Action Simulation help global decision-makers improve their knowledge about effective climate solutions, feel more engaged with climate change, and empower them to take action. These findings suggest interactive simulation can play a growing role in how climate decisions are made.

The study included nearly 1,000 participants across 37 sessions, including elected U.S. government officials, members of Congress, mayors, diplomats, senior executives, and professionals in business and NGOs. Researchers used surveys before and after each session, along with follow-up interviews, to understand how the experience shaped decision-makers’ thinking. Many reported an increased motivation to act on climate.

This research builds on years of experience using interactive simulation to support better climate decision-making. These experiences offer space to test assumptions and learn what works to address climate change in an engaging, accessible way. We are focused on scaling these proven approaches so more leaders around the world can make informed decisions that rapidly reduce emissions.

We are grateful to the team behind this research, including lead author Juliette N. Rooney-Varga, University of Massachusetts Lowell Climate Change Initiative Director, and our collaborators at the MIT Climate Pathways Project:
